1080i Vs 1080p Display Formats
This article looks at 1080i vs 1080p display formats. These are the two main High Definition formats that are available for High Definition digital televisions. Both of these formats have a 1920×1080 pixel resolution. The difference between these formats is how the signal is sent from the player to the screen.
1080i vs 1080p – The 1080i Format
“1080i” format displays the video in alternative fields comprised of 540 rows that run from the top to the bottom of the screen. Odd fields are displayed first and the even ones after. Both of the fields make up a frame of 1080 rows of pixels, which refresh every 1/30th of a second. This interlaced format is similar to way the old CRT televisions operated.
1080i vs 1080p – The 1080p Format
“1080p” is slightly different in that both the odd and even fields are displayed at the same time, which creates a smoother image with less artifacts and jagged edges. In theory it is better than 1080i because these televisions are able to display every pixel at the same time, this is noticeably better for fast moving videos.
The p is for progressive, while the i is for interlaced. The difference in quality is not often noticeable by the naked eye for most video watching.
There are differences within 1080p and each has a different frame rate. 1080p/60 is the most common and has a frame rate of 1/60th of a second, 1080p/30 has a frame rate of 1/30th of a second and 1080p/24 is 1/24th of a second. The process can either be dome by the source player or by the screen .
Most High Definition digital televisions process in 1080p now, but they are able to play 1080i as well. The majority of High definition television broadcasts are in the 1080i format.
There are three different High Definition televisions, these are, LED , DLP, and plasma. A 1080p LED HDTV and DLP HDTV offer the highest quality viewing experience, followed by the plasma HDTV. The 1080i vs 1080p difference is really quite negligible for most video watching, and the best way to appreciate the improvement of 1080p over 1080i is with your own eyes. Those who view fast placed action video like sports events or action movies for example, will surely appreciate the the 1080i vs 1080p difference, as with 1080p will see a reduction in jerky images and jagged edges, as well as a smoother transition between frames on the television.
