1080P Resolution / 1080i Resolution
“1080p resolution” is also known as Full HD and it is one of the two main HD formats that exist for HDTVs. The other is 1080i and both formats have a very detailed 1920×1080 pixel resolution. The main difference with these formats is in the way the video data is transmitted from the video source to the screen. 1080p and 1080i both relate to plasma, and LED vs LCD TVs.
Full HD 1080p resolution creates a smoother video play-back with less pixel artifacts and jagged frames than 1080i. The 1080i format displays the video in different fields made up of 540 rows that run from the top, to the bottom of the display. Odd fields are displayed first and then even ones. Both of these fields make up a frame of 1080 rows of pixels, which last for 1/30 of a second. The 1080p resolution format displays the odd and even fields simultaneously, which shows every pixel in the images at one time.
1080p Resolution – Refresh Rates
There are different formats within Full HD, that have different refresh rates. 1080p/60 is used most often, and has a refresh rate of 1/60th of a second. 1080/30 has a refresh rate of 1/30th of a second and 1080/24 is 1/24th of a second. The Full HD process can either be done by the video source or by the display.
What does the P in 1080p Resolution actually stand for?
The letter “p” in 1080p resolution means progressive scan, whereas the letter “i” in 1080i means interlaced. The interlaced format is the same as the one used by the older CRT televisions and monitors.
1080p vs 1080i
The main advantage of Full HD 1080p vs 1080i is the ability to smoothly play fast moving videos. These could include things like action packed movies or sports events. However the live HD broadcasts are still using the 1080i format at the moment.
The film industry uses the 1080p/24 as standard in its digital mastering process. Blue Ray discs use the 1080p/60, 1080p/50 and 1080p/24 formats. YouTube videos now offer the option of full HD in many of its content. The present generation of video game consoles also use this format, which provides a very smooth gaming experience. The format is also available on many of the current digital cameras, including DSLR’s and point and shoot cameras. Most digital camcorders also use this format.
So what is the best? 1080p Resolution or 1080i Resolution?
This format is currently the smoothest and most detailed format available. Many experts will say that an LCD HD television with Full HD is currently the best possible display, and plasma Full HD displays come in at a very close second. Often the difference between the two HD formats are negligible and wont be seen by the naked eye, but it does make a difference for fast moving digital video. Regardless of whether you choose to buy an LCD or a Plasma, 1080p resolution is the way to go.
Just a word of advice, as this just happened to one of our writers, poor soul, his little boy knocked over his beautiful 60 inch Sony HDTV. Shattered the whole thing. So if you have a little child, regardless of 1080p resolution or 1080i resolution, it would be in your best interest to get a hdtv flat screen wall mount.
